Israel Welcomes 31,000 New Immigrants Over Previous Year, Despite War

Over the Jewish year 5784, which is coming to an end this week, 31,000 immigrants arrived in Israel from more than 100 countries despite the challenges posed by the ongoing war. According to data released by the Ministry of Aliyah and Integration and the Jewish Agency for Israel ahead of Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year, the largest group of new arrivals came from Russia, with 19,850 people, followed by over 3,340 immigrants from the US and Canada. Other significant contributors to immigration included France, Ukraine, and Belarus.

Minister of Aliyah and Integration Ofir Sofer noted that “aliyah [Jewish immigration to Israel] is one of the cornerstones of Zionism,” highlighting the powerful connection between the global Jewish community and Israel, particularly during the difficult times since the outbreak of the war on October 7. Sofer also stressed that the government is working to ensure the proper integration of new immigrants and to encourage even more people to make Israel their home.

In addition to the 31,000 new arrivals, interest in aliyah surged during the war, especially from Western countries. France saw a 352% increase in aliyah inquiries, while the US and Canada also experienced significant spikes.

Young people between the ages of 18 and 35 accounted for nearly a third of all immigrants, representing a crucial engine for Israel’s future growth. Cities like Netanya, Tel Aviv, and Haifa were among the top destinations for the new residents.

Jewish Agency Chairman Maj. Gen. Doron Almog called aliyah a “tremendous growth engine for Israel,” adding that it brings hope and resilience in various sectors of life.
