Israel’s Justice Minister Taps Gali Baharav-Miara as Attorney-General

Israel’s Justice Minister Gideon Sa’ar on Monday revealed his pick to be the country’s next attorney-general: former Tel Aviv District Attorney for Civil Affairs Gali Baharav-Miara. Her appointment requires cabinet approval, which is expected next week. If confirmed, Baharav-Miara will be the first woman to serve as attorney-general in the Jewish state. “It is appropriate to appoint a woman to this position for the first time in the history of the country,” Sa’ar said in a statement on Monday. “But I suggest appointing attorney Baharav-Miara not for this reason, but because she is the best, most mature, most worthy candidate, and possesses the richest and most impressive professional and managerial background.” The six-year term of the current attorney-general, Avichai Mandelblit, ends today. State Prosecutor Amit Aisman will be acting attorney-general until Mandelblit’s permanent replacement takes office.
