Kamil Idris Sworn In as Sudan’s Prime Minister After 2-Year Power Vacuum

Kamil Idris was sworn in as Sudan’s new prime minister on Saturday in Khartoum, formally assuming a post left vacant since early 2022. The ceremony was presided over by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, head of the Transitional Sovereign Council and commander of the Sudanese Armed Forces. Idris’s appointment, made official by constitutional decree on May 19, received support from international bodies including the United Nations, the African Union, and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development.

Following the swearing-in, Idris met with Burhan and other council members to discuss urgent national priorities, such as addressing the country’s economic collapse, improving security, and ensuring the protection of civilians in conflict zones.

The post of prime minister had been vacant since Abdalla Hamdok resigned in January 2022. Hamdok stepped down following a failed civilian-military power-sharing agreement that collapsed after Burhan’s 2021 coup. “Sudan is at a dangerous turning point,” Hamdok warned at the time, as anti-coup protests spread across the country.

Idris, an expert in international law, brings diplomatic experience from his time as director-general of the World Intellectual Property Organization. He also previously served as secretary-general of the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants.

His appointment comes as Sudan remains mired in civil war between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The conflict, which began in April 2023, has left tens of thousands dead and displaced millions, worsening an already dire humanitarian situation.

With the crisis ongoing, Idris faces the immediate task of navigating Sudan’s fractured politics and shattered institutions.
