King Abdullah II Urges Regional De-escalation During US Congressional Delegation Meeting
King Abdullah II of Jordan reaffirmed on Sunday that Jordan will not allow its territory to become a battlefield for external conflicts, emphasizing the country’s commitment to protecting its citizens. This declaration came during a meeting in Amman with a delegation from the US Congress.
During the discussion, King Abdullah stressed “the necessity of exerting maximum efforts to reduce escalation in the region and reach a comprehensive calm, to avoid sliding into a regional war.” As long as the war in Gaza persists, he said, the region remains at risk of further destabilization.
The king also highlighted the threat posed by extremist settler attacks on Palestinians in the West Bank and raised concerns about what he described as violations of Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem. He reiterated the necessity of fostering a political environment conducive to a just and lasting peace, based on the two-state solution, as the only viable path to ensuring the safety and security of both Palestinians and Israelis, as well as the broader region.
In addition, King Abdullah underscored the need for continuing support to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) to ensure it can fulfill its mandate to provide essential humanitarian assistance to millions of Palestinians in Gaza and the surrounding areas.
