Pager Explosions Targeting Hezbollah Operatives in Lebanon Kill at Least 12, Injure Thousands

A series of devastating explosions rocked Lebanon on Tuesday, initially reported to have killed at least 11 people and injured over 4,000. However, updated figures indicate that the explosions killed at least 12 people and injured over 2,750. Andrea López-Tomàs reports that the blasts, triggered by modified pagers, occurred simultaneously in Hezbollah-controlled areas, including Beirut’s southern suburbs and parts of southern Lebanon. The devices, used for communication by Hezbollah members, exploded without warning, causing widespread injuries, particularly to the chest, face, and limbs of victims. The explosions also took place in Syria, where they killed at least seven people.

Hezbollah immediately blamed Israel for the attack, vowing retaliation for what it described as “criminal aggression.” The group declared that Israel would “receive its just punishment.” The Lebanese government condemned the explosions, calling them a major violation of Lebanon’s security and sovereignty. Meanwhile, hospitals in Beirut are overwhelmed, with many of the injured in critical condition, requiring emergency surgeries.

Lebanon’s Health Minister Firas Abiad confirmed that many victims remain in serious condition, and authorities have urged the public to discard their pagers, fearing more explosions. Israel has not commented on the accusations.
