Saudi Arabia Hosts World Environment Day 2024, Emphasizes Land Preservation

Saudi Arabia celebrated World Environment Day 2024 on Wednesday, focusing on land preservation and drought resilience under the theme “Our Land, Our Future.” The event, led by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), is celebrated annually by over 150 countries.

Saudi Environment Minister Abdulrahman Abdulmohsen AlFadley addressed the gathering, emphasizing the kingdom’s efforts in preserving land, reducing degradation, and promoting vegetation cover and biodiversity. He highlighted initiatives aimed at enhancing food and water security and adapting to climate change to improve quality of life.

AlFadley also announced that Saudi Arabia will host the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP16) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification in December. This event will aim to strengthen global efforts to combat land degradation and drought, which affects more than 3 billion people worldwide.

UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen stressed the importance of World Environment Day in mobilizing efforts to address challenges such as water scarcity and the loss of arable land due to unsustainable human activities and climate change. Andersen noted, “Confronting these challenges requires collective responsibility and regional and international cooperation to enhance strategies.”

Since its inception in 1973, World Environment Day has become the largest global platform for environmental outreach, engaging millions of people worldwide in efforts to protect the planet.
