Sudan’s Cholera Outbreak Threatens Lives of Displaced Populations

Veronica Neifakh reports that Sudan is facing a severe cholera outbreak that is putting the lives of displaced populations at great risk. The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has raised alarms, particularly in the states of Kassala, Gedaref, and Jazirah, which are hosting not only refugees from neighboring countries but also thousands of internally displaced Sudanese. Assadullah Nasrullah, UNHCR’s communications officer in Sudan, emphasized the gravity of the situation, noting that this is the second cholera outbreak since the conflict in Sudan began. The conflict, which erupted in April 2023 between the Sudan Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, has led to massive displacement, with over 10 million people internally displaced and millions more fleeing to neighboring countries.

The situation is worsened by overcrowded camps, limited medical supplies, and overburdened health systems. Despite ongoing efforts by UNHCR and partner organizations to control the outbreak through water chlorination, health campaigns, and disease surveillance, challenges remain significant. Neifakh’s report stresses that while steps are being taken to address the crisis, the continued conflict and heavy rains may further complicate efforts to curb the spread of cholera. Nasrullah’s insights highlight the dire need for continued international support and effective local interventions to protect Sudan’s vulnerable populations. Readers are encouraged to explore Neifakh’s full article for a deeper understanding of the complex and urgent situation.
