Syria’s New President To Attend Emergency Arab League Summit in Cairo
Syria’s new president Ahmed al-Sharaa has accepted an invitation from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to attend an emergency Arab League summit in Cairo on March 4, the Syrian presidency announced on Sunday.
Declared president for a transitional phase last month after the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham-led offensive that ousted Assad in December, Sharaa has since vowed to pursue a broad political transition. His plans include forming an inclusive government and holding elections—a process he estimates could take up to four years.

Egypt, long wary of Islamist movements and viewing them as an existential threat, has approached Syria’s new administration with caution. Egyptian officials stressed that for Syria to regain regional support, its new leadership must steer a transition free from external interventions. Although President al-Sisi congratulated Sharaa on his appointment, the two leaders are set to meet face-to-face for the first time at the upcoming summit.
The Cairo summit is expected to focus on several pressing issues, including Arab efforts to counter US President Donald Trump’s proposals urging Egypt and Jordan to resettle displaced Gazans. The summit will provide a platform for Arab nations to coordinate their response.
