UN Warns of Intense Seasonal Rains Impacting 770,000 in Somalia

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) issued a warning Sunday about the expected heavy Gu rains in Somalia, which are anticipated to affect approximately 770,000 people across 22 districts. These seasonal rains, occurring from April to June, have already begun in most regions of Somalia with intensity in some areas, although no immediate flooding has been reported.

OCHA has already developed a strategic plan to mitigate the impact of these rains and is urgently seeking resources to ensure a timely response. The plan includes the utilization of 51 boats for evacuating people and delivering assistance in priority areas along the Shabelle and Juba rivers. These efforts aim to reach those potentially isolated by the floods or in need of evacuation.

The agency is engaging in gap analysis and early warning activities, particularly at evacuation sites identified as hotspots. Despite the challenges, the rains have benefitted pastoralists and agropastoralists by regenerating pasture and replenishing water points, providing some relief amid the broader crisis.

This comes after the heavy Deyr rains from the previous year, which displaced 1.6 million people. OCHA has also raised concerns about potential cholera outbreaks triggered by the current rains in areas previously unaffected for years. In response, OCHA, along with its partners and Somalia health authorities, have intensified their preparedness and response efforts with a six-month action plan that needs $5.9 million to execute.
