The Palestinian Health Ministry identified the suspect as 20-year-old Muhannad al-Mazraa from al-Eizariya, a Palestinian town in the West Bank, just east of Jerusalem. He was dressed in a neon vest, posing as a security guard, and had obtained a work permit as a cleaner at a community center in the settlement, a city of around 38,000 people.
The Islamic armed groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad did not claim responsibility for the act but praised it as “heroic.”
“This operation is a natural response to the storming of the sacred Al-Aqsa Mosque,” Islamic Jihad spokesman Tariq Salami said, referring to a visit to the Temple Mount by Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir and thousands of other religious Jews last week to mark the Jewish fast day of Tisha B’Av.
At least 26 people, most of them Israelis, have been killed in Palestinian attacks, and about 200 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli soldiers and settlers, since the beginning of the year.
