This holiday season, give to:

Truth and understanding

The Media Line's intrepid correspondents are in Israel, Gaza, Lebanon, Syria and Pakistan providing first-person reporting.

They all said they cover it.
We see it.

We report with just one agenda: the truth.

Join Magnum photographer Newsha Tavakolian for a 5-week programme exploring personal connections and intuition in lens-based practice

About this event

Join Newsha Tavakolian for a five-week online workshop where you will focus on telling intimate stories through moving and still images.

Through discussions and group crits, you will explore intuition in your work and forge deeper personal connections with your topics. You will learn how to shoot from your heart, creating more meaningful images by listening to intuitive voices, opposed to what you believe others want to see. You will be asked to create new work on a weekly basis, which will be presented to Newsha, who will offer feedback and support. Lectures and references to photography and film will also contribute to this working process.

This is an opportunity to tackle your questions and doubts around creating a meaningful relationship with a project, as well as drawing out the personal. You will engage with these ideas with the support of Newsha, who in recent years, has put the most intimate questions at the center of her work, with projects such as For the Sake of Calmness.

“I used to think that photographers should travel to wars and earthquakes to capture suffering, but it’s much harder to portray the atmosphere of those suffering in their normal lives. When my heart hurts for someone, even my sister or neighbour, I want to tell their story.”

Newsha Tavakolian started a career in photography as a photojournalist, however in recent years, she has developed a more conceptual approach to her work. During the workshop she will draw upon her experience both as a staff photographer for publications, and as an artist.

As a participant in this course, you can expect to dive into personal discussions on topics that may require vulnerability, share your motivations, give and receive knowledge to and from your peers, as well as hone in on recognising and following your intuition when making work.

We offer two scholarships for photographers based in Iran. See bottom of the page for details.

This workshop is open to photographers using both still and moving images.

“For me, seeing a project through, is a process of building, demolishing, and rebuilding”

This workshop offers:

  • Mentoring by Magnum photographer Newsha Tavakolian
  • Individual portfolio reviews
  • Group portfolio reviews
  • Training on editing and sequencing
