Rare Books Workshop with the Jacob M. Lowy Collection (LAC) From San Paternian to St. Urbain Street: Jewish Texts, Canadian Connections

About this event

Although the first known use of Hebrew type in Canada was an ambiguous reference to a verse from Isaiah in a treatise on prophetical chronology printed in 1844, the study and appreciation of antiquarian Jewish texts also include the owners, provenance, and narratives associated with these books. This workshop collaboration between the Jacob Lowy Collection and the Jewish Public Library will tease out some of these stories that will walk you from the streets of Venice at San Paternian near Daniel Bomberg’s print shop in 1519, through the age of Hirsch Wolofsky and the first Talmud printed in North America in 1919.

This workshop is generously supported by the Dr. Michael D. Paul Rare Books Initiative of the Jewish Public Library.
