Seminar: Gender Relations in the Middle East

Seminar: Gender Relations in the Middle East

This seminar, organized by the Feminist Section of the Sociology Students Association, will be held on January 10 from noon to 2 pm, at Grodzka 52, Jagiellonian University, Kraków, Poland. It will be conducted in English.

We are pleased to host the scholars who come to Kraków as a part of the project ‘InSPIREurope’ – Dr. Leila Papoli-Yazdi from Gothenburg University and Dr. Majid S. Mgamis from Linnaeus University.

Dr. Mgamis will examine Islamic family law with a view to highlighting the role of women in the Islamic marriage institution. Taking the current Jordanian family law as a case study, his presentation will show how married women lack power and agency within Islamic family law. We will be examining specific articles from the law, locating them in classical Islamic teachings and showing how they undermine the role of women.

The event will be chaired by Inga Hajdarowicz.
