Erez Calderon Celebrating His 12th Birthday in Captivity

Erez Calderon was abducted from his home in Kibbutz Nir Oz in October 7 together with his sister Sa’ar and his dad Ofer. That Saturday Hamas terrorists infiltrated their community and killed, murdered, tortured, and kidnapped at least one-quarter of the kibbutz residents. Videos of Erez being held by two Hamas gunmen in the Gaza Strip were published on social media.

Today is Erez’s 12th birthday. “I want him to be here. I want to celebrate him. I even have hope that he will come today with all the rest of the family. Erez is a child full of laughter and love,” said Hadas Calderon, his mother, at a press conference.

This family suffered great losses during the assault. In addition to its three members who are still in Hamas captivity, Hadas’ mother, Carmela, 80, and her 12-year-old niece with autism, Noya, were murdered that day and their bodies were found by the authorities a week ago.

“I just came back now from [her mother’s] grave,” said Calderon, “Because a week ago, I couldn’t reach the funeral. All week I didn’t have any time, even to grieve [or] to feel my … pain,” she added.

Calderon explicitly demanded that Hamas release all the hostages that are still in captivity. She urged the international community to apply pressure to ensure this happens. “There are still [224] citizens, babies, children, old, sick people who need medicines. They are all still there in bad condition … they left them underground, deep underground in the tunnels, 40 meters underground,” she stressed.
