Germany has reopened its embassy in Damascus, marking the first time its diplomatic mission has been operational in Syria since 2012, when the civil war prompted its closure. Baerbock’s visit, her second to Syria since the collapse of former President Bashar al-Assad’s government in December 2024, included meetings with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani, and representatives of Syrian civil society. She also toured the Jobar neighborhood in Damascus, an area that suffered extensive destruction during the war.
