Armed Drones Target US-Hosted Airbase in Iraq, Prompting Increased Security Measures

Two armed drones were intercepted on Tuesday near Iraq’s Ain al-Asad airbase, which houses US and other international forces, according to military sources in Iraq. This incident marks the second drone attack targeting US forces since a pause in hostilities by Iranian-backed groups earlier in the year. Fortunately, no casualties were reported in the latest assault.

One of the drones was successfully neutralized by the base’s defense systems near the perimeter, showcasing the readiness and responsiveness of the forces stationed there. Following the attack, the Iraqi army increased patrols around the base to enhance security and prevent further incidents.

The timing of the drone strike is particularly sensitive, occurring just days before a high-level Iraqi military delegation is expected to visit Washington. The talks are set to focus on the future of the US-led military coalition in Iraq, which was initially established in 2014 to combat the Islamic State group.

These ongoing security challenges underscore the complex dynamics in Iraq, where the US and its allies continue to face threats from local militias and other hostile entities despite the winding down of major combat operations against ISIS.
