Hezbollah Operative Killed in Syria as Israel Steps Up Retaliation

Israel’s military announced it had killed a Hezbollah operative in Syria who was responsible for relaying intelligence against Israel in the Golan Heights, as Israeli airstrikes targeted sites in Syria on Thursday.

This escalation comes amid growing fears of a wider Middle East conflict involving Iran and the US, as Israel continues its retaliation against Iran-linked terrorists following the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel. Ground clashes between Israeli forces and Hezbollah have intensified along Lebanon’s southern frontier, while Israeli airstrikes have extended into Iran, Yemen, and Syria.

Israeli forces identified the Hezbollah operative as Adham Jahout, a member of Hezbollah’s “Golan Terrorist Network,” who was involved in transmitting intelligence from Syrian sources to Hezbollah for operations in the Golan Heights.

Syria also reported further Israeli airstrikes on industrial and military sites in Homs and Hama, while the Israeli military intercepted a drone over the Red Sea. The White House confirmed that US President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed Israeli plans for retaliation during a phone call on Wednesday, with Biden urging Netanyahu to minimize civilian harm in Lebanon.
