Israel’s Independence Day Clouded by War as Population Nears Historic 10 Million Mark

As Israel marked a somber 76th Independence Day amidst ongoing conflict and a national hostage crisis, the country also acknowledged a significant demographic milestone. According to the Central Bureau of Statistics, Israel’s population has grown to approximately 9.9 million and is projected to surpass the 10 million mark by its 77th birthday next year. This announcement comes as the nation grapples with the aftermath of Hamas’ deadly October 7th attack and continues to face internal strife and polarization.

The annual torch-lighting ceremony, reflecting the current national mood, was pre-recorded for the first time and featured a distinctly somber tone. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s inserted message contrasted sharply with the event’s reflective and subdued atmosphere. Organizers chose to pre-record the ceremony to avoid potential disruptions following incidents of heckling at recent Memorial Day ceremonies.

The country’s population grew by about 189,000 people over the last year, fueled by the birth of 196,000 babies and the arrival of 37,000 immigrants despite a decrease in immigration from the previous year. As Israel’s demographic landscape continues to evolve, its population includes 73.2% Jewish Israelis, 21.1% Arabs, and 5.7% from other minority groups.

Alternative ceremonies, including a “torch dousing” event in Binyamina and a major gathering in Tel Aviv’s Hostage Square, underscored the divided sentiment across the nation, particularly among families affected by the ongoing conflict and those directly impacted by the October tragedy.
