Netanyahu Threatens Retaliation Against Houthis as UN Urges Restraint
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed on Monday to respond forcefully to ongoing attacks by Yemen’s Houthi forces. Speaking in Tel Aviv, Netanyahu addressed “the Houthis and all those who wish us harm,” declaring, “Any attack against Israel will not go unanswered. There will be a forceful response.” Without going into detail about retaliation, he noted that the Houthis have already taken “heavy blows from Israel and American allies.”
Since the start of the war in Gaza in October 2023, Houthi fighters based in Yemen have launched dozens of missiles and drones at Israel and struck commercial ships purportedly linked to Israel in the Red Sea, causing a crisis in international shipping. They have said the strikes are in solidarity with Palestinians under Israeli bombardment.

In response, Israel and a US-led naval coalition have carried out repeated airstrikes on Houthi-controlled territory in Yemen. President Donald Trump has vowed to “completely annihilate” the Houthis if they continue attacks.
Also on Monday, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric raised alarm about escalating violence involving Yemen, expressing concern that escalating strikes on Houthi-controlled areas may “pose grave risks to the already dire humanitarian situation.” He also said that five humanitarian workers were injured in recent US strikes on the Houthi-controlled Ras Isa oil port.
Dujarric also condemned the Houthis’ military actions. “We also remain deeply concerned about the ongoing missile and drone strikes conducted by the Houthis against Israel and in the Red Sea,” he said, urging all sides to show restraint.
