Qatar Will Start Providing Gas to Syria

Qatar will begin supplying gas to Syria through Jordan in a bid to ease the country’s energy shortages, news outlets reported on Thursday. Syria’s state-run Syrian Arab News Agency quoted Khalifa Abdullah Al Sharif, a senior Qatari diplomat in Damascus, as saying the initiative is meant to “contribute to generating electricity starting from 400 megawatts, with gradual increases by the Qatar Fund for Development.”

The Qatar Fund for Development is the country’s state-run foreign aid body, which transfers hundreds of millions in aid each year. Qatar is among the richest countries in the world, with much of its wealth stemming from its natural gas reserves.

The Qatari gas supply, facilitated through Jordan, is expected to help restore power to hospitals, water systems, and industry, offering much-needed relief to Syrians.

Years of war and economic collapse have left Syria struggling with power shortages, as damaged infrastructure and reduced oil production hindered electricity supply. Before the conflict, the country met its energy needs through domestic production and imports, but the prolonged crisis has severely strained essential services.

Speaking to Reuters, a US official confirmed Washington has approved the deal to transfer Qatari gas to Syria, signaling a shift in policy following the recent overthrow of Syrian leader Bashar Assad.

Since 2020, Syria has faced strict US sanctions under the Caesar Act, which targeted financial and energy transactions to limit foreign support for Assad’s government. With opposition forces now in control, Washington appears open to easing restrictions to stabilize the country’s economy, particularly in energy and infrastructure.
