Sudan Accuses UAE of Supplying Weapons to RSF, UAE Denies Claims

The Sudanese government accused the United Arab Emirates on Wednesday of providing weapons to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group fighting Sudan’s military, thereby extending the 17-month conflict. Sudanese Ambassador Al-Harith Mohamed claimed that the UAE supplied RSF with heavy arms and profited from Sudanese gold, a charge the UAE quickly denied, calling it “baseless” and accusing Sudan’s military of evading peace negotiations.

The exchange occurred during a UN Security Council meeting where its 15 members unanimously voted to extend an arms embargo on Sudan’s Darfur region until September 2025. Sudan has been engulfed in war since April 2023, when tensions between the military and the RSF erupted, leading to widespread conflict in Khartoum, Darfur, and beyond. More than 13 million people have been displaced, and over 20,000 have been killed, according to the World Health Organization.

Ambassador Mohamed alleged that the UAE was exploiting Sudan’s resources through the illegal transport of weapons via Chad, and called for sanctions against the RSF and its supporters. In response, UAE Ambassador Mohamed Abushahab dismissed the claims, urging Sudan’s military to participate in peace talks.

International pleas for Sudan’s military to attend peace negotiations in Geneva last month were ignored, while the RSF sent a delegation. The UN’s fact-finding team recently reported widespread war crimes, accusing both sides of atrocities, including crimes against humanity. Calls to expand the arms embargo to all of Sudan have been growing, though efforts to do so at the Security Council have been unsuccessful.
