Suicide Bombing Kills at Least 6 in Somali Capital Amid Elections

A suicide bomber blew himself up at an intersection near the heavily guarded Somali presidential palace in the capital Mogadishu on Thursday morning, killing at least six people and injuring 13. The terrorist was wearing explosive vests wrapped around his waist, which he detonated at 10:30 am local time, according to Somali police spokesman Abdifatah Aden Hassan. “A suicide bomber blew himself up at the El Gaab intersection while it was closed, and the device exploded, causing casualties,” he said in a statement. He told Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency that the target was a convoy carrying voters who were coming back from a parliamentary election venue in Mogadishu. “We believe the suicide bomber wanted to target vehicles carrying voters, but it seems that they missed the target,” he said. The al-Qaida-affiliated terrorist group al-Shabab claimed responsibility for Thursday’s bombing, confirming that it targeted delegates selecting lawmakers for Somalia’s lower house of parliament, the House of the People.

On Wednesday, at least four people were killed – including three civilians and one security officer – and six others injured in mortar attacks on Barawe, the capital of Somalia’s South West State, while voting for Somalia’s parliamentary elections was underway there. Al-Shabab claimed responsibility.
