During a session on Monday, US Ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, celebrated the council’s decision, emphasizing that it voted for peace. The resolution demands the implementation of a three-phase cease-fire and calls on Hamas to accept the terms outlined by President Biden on May 31, which Israel has already agreed to. It also extends the cease-fire beyond six weeks if necessary, as long as peace negotiations continue.
Algeria, representing the Arab nations in the council, praised the resolution for potentially marking a significant step toward a lasting cease-fire and reducing Palestinian suffering. In contrast, Russia expressed concerns about Israel’s lack of specific commitments and the vague nature of the resolution’s parameters, which prevented it from offering full support.
