Airstrike Hits Market in Khartoum, Killing 23 Civilians

At least 23 civilians were killed, and more than 40 were injured in an airstrike that targeted a busy market in southern Khartoum on Saturday, local volunteers and humanitarian groups reported. The attack struck Al-Souk Al-Markazy (central market) in the afternoon, according to the South Khartoum Emergency Room, a volunteer organization. Those injured were rushed to nearby hospitals, including Bashair, Elrazi, and Alraqi, where several remain in critical condition.

No faction has claimed responsibility for the airstrike. The incident follows a significant military offensive by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) on September 26 against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The SAF has been attempting to reclaim parts of the capital that remain under RSF control.

Sudan has been engulfed in intense fighting since April 2023, when a power struggle between the SAF and RSF escalated into widespread violence. The United Nations estimates that since the conflict began, nearly 20,000 people have died, thousands more have been injured, and millions have been displaced across the country. Despite international efforts to broker peace, the situation in Sudan remains dire, with no resolution in sight.
