Iraq Prepares for November 2023 Provincial Elections: Prime Minister Meets With UN Representative

In a meeting held on Monday, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani and Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, the United Nations secretary-general’s special representative for Iraq, discussed the political landscape in Iraq and preparations for the upcoming provincial council elections in November 2023.

According to a statement from his media office, al-Sudani reiterated the government’s commitment to successfully conducting the elections. He confirmed that Iraq is receptive to UN-proposed solutions to tackle economic and climate challenges, as well as the crisis of displaced persons.

Hennis-Plasschaert, in turn, expressed appreciation for the government’s resolution to prioritize the needs of the Iraqi people.

Earlier Monday, the Independent High Electoral Commission announced that registration for alliances and parties interested in participating in the provincial council elections would run from July 1 to July 30.

Set for November 6, these elections will cover 15 out of 18 provinces, excluding those of the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region. The last provincial elections were held in April 2013, with subsequent elections repeatedly delayed due to political disagreements.
