Russia, Iran Align on Nuclear Talks, Emphasize Diplomacy in Tehran Meeting
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov held talks in Tehran on Tuesday, aligning Russia and Iran’s positions on key aspects of Iran’s nuclear program. According to a statement from Russia’s Foreign Ministry, Lavrov met with both Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, covering a wide array of bilateral and regional topics, including the stalled Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
The JCPOA, signed in 2015, lifted sanctions on Iran in exchange for curbs on its nuclear activities. Lavrov emphasized that diplomacy remains a viable path for resolving outstanding differences around Iran’s nuclear program. Meanwhile, the head of the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog, Rafael Grossi of the International Atomic Energy Agency, recently reiterated concerns about Iran’s ongoing uranium enrichment at up to 60% purity—well beyond the level needed for civilian purposes.

Iran has consistently denied seeking nuclear weapons. However, no other country has enriched uranium to 60% without eventually producing nuclear arms. Grossi, who aims to visit Tehran for the first time in a year, said the pace of enrichment has slowed but remains significant at around seven kilograms per month.
In addition to the nuclear issue, Lavrov and Iranian leaders discussed various regional matters, including Syria, Lebanon, Afghanistan, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Russia and Iran, both subject to Western sanctions, have strengthened their relationship in recent years, culminating in a strategic partnership agreement signed in January. Iran has also voiced support for Russia’s ongoing military campaign in Ukraine.
