Tunisia Sees 3.37 Million Tourists by June, Up 5.3%
Tunisia welcomed at least 3.37 million tourists by June 10 this year, showing a 5.3% rise compared to the same period last year, private radio station Mosaique FM reported on Saturday.
Aymen Rahmani, the director of studies and international cooperation at the Tunisian National Tourist Office, expressed optimism about the trend, stating, “The total number of tourists is likely to reach 10 million by the end of this year.”
Between January 1 and May 31, tourists spent 5.87 million nights in Tunisian hotels, marking a 6.4% increase over the same period in 2023, Rahmani highlighted.
Tourism plays a crucial role in Tunisia’s economy, contributing 9% to the gross domestic product and providing nearly 400,000 jobs. However, the sector has faced significant challenges over the past decade. The Arab Spring uprising in 2011 and the terrorist attacks at the Bardo Museum in Tunis and a beach resort in Sousse in 2015 severely impacted tourism.
Despite these setbacks, the recent figures suggest a strong recovery, with the sector potentially reaching 10 million tourists by the end of the year, indicating renewed confidence among international visitors.
