Turkey Detains 40 in Counterterror and Drug Raids in Izmir
Turkish security forces arrested 40 individuals in Izmir as part of a large-scale operation targeting terrorism and drug-related crimes, according to state-run Anadolu Agency. The counterterrorism and narcotics raids took place in central Izmir and the Menemen district, involving multiple security units, including intelligence and anti-smuggling teams.
During the operation, authorities confiscated 8,277 synthetic drug pills, 77 grams of marijuana, four unlicensed pistols, and a rifle. Officials believe the detained individuals have ties to both the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and the Gülen movement, two organizations classified as threats by the Turkish government.

The PKK, considered a terrorist group by Turkey, the US, and the European Union, has engaged in a long-running conflict with the Turkish state for over three decades. Additionally, Turkish authorities hold the Gülen movement responsible for orchestrating the 2016 failed coup attempt, which led to 249 deaths and over 2,200 injuries. Fethullah Gülen, the movement’s exiled leader, lived in the US until his death in October 2024.
This latest operation underscores Turkey’s ongoing security measures to combat terrorism and organized crime. Officials have yet to confirm whether additional arrests or operations are planned.
