UAE Sends Aid to Ethiopia in Response to Landslides
The United Arab Emirates announced Saturday that its international development agency had dispatched a plane carrying essential aid to Ethiopia in response to the deadly landslides that rocked the East African country last week. According to the United Nations’ most recent death toll, the disaster has killed at least 257 people in the remote Gofa region in southern Ethiopia.
Reports say last week’s landslides, the first of which occurred last Sunday, caused widespread property damage and were also the deadliest in the country’s history. They were caused by heavy rainfall. “The UAE relief endeavors aim to provide urgent assistance to those impacted by the natural disaster,” the Emirati state-run WAM news agency said in a statement.

Speaking on the UAE’s efforts in both Africa and more broadly, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation, Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy, affirmed the Gulf state’s commitment to providing global humanitarian assistance.
The risk of further landslides in the Gofa Zone remains high. According to the UN’s humanitarian arm, some 15,500 people in the area, including at least 1,320 children under the age of five, are still at risk of being affected.
