US Approves $20 Billion Weapons Sale to Israel, Including 50 F-15 Jets

The US State Department has approved potential weapons sales to Israel valued at approximately $20 billion, including a major deal for up to 50 F-15 fighter jets worth over $18 billion. This package, which is one of the largest ever for Israel, also includes medium tactical vehicles, air-to-air missiles, high-explosive mortar cartridges, and tank cartridges. Congress was formally notified of these approvals on Tuesday by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency.

While Congress must still approve the sales, the process has already begun with key congressional leaders having given their initial consent earlier this year. Lawmakers now have 30 days to block the sales, though this is unlikely. The delivery of the equipment, such as the F-15 jets, is not expected until 2029.

This arms deal has drawn criticism, particularly from those opposed to the Biden Administration’s approach to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which has resulted in significant loss of life. Critics argue that the US has not exerted enough pressure on Israel regarding its military actions in the Palestinian territory.

The timing of the announcement coincides with increased tensions in the Middle East, following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and ahead of renewed cease-fire talks. The weapons are intended to bolster Israel’s ability to defend itself against regional threats, according to statements from the US and Israeli defense officials.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant expressed gratitude to US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Secretary of State Antony Blinken, stressing the importance of the deal for Israel’s security.
