Any Result Short of a Complete Victory Will Spell Disaster for Us

Maariv, Israel, May 19

Even in the most unbearable of days, I have a message for the bride of someone still held captive by Hamas. I found her words on the eve of Memorial Day, meant to honor those who fell in Israel’s wars and those killed in hostilities, to be unsettling. Her bluntness and the bravado directed at the government were misplaced. Releasing the hostages isn’t a simple matter; it involves many painful challenges and decisions. The truth must not be obscured. Moreover, no segment of the population, not even the relatives of the hostages, has the exclusive right to determine what Israel’s course of action should be. Numerous other groups also deserve to have their voices heard. For instance, consider the families whose loved ones were murdered by individuals whose release is now being demanded. They have a right to speak up, too. Let us also listen to those who got injured during the conflict. Their struggle is unending, and their voices demand attention. As do the voices of those who may remain displaced from their homes indefinitely. The list of affected parties continues—bereaved parents, young widows, orphans, and wounded siblings. Those advocating for an immediate deal, at any cost, will pave the way for a difficult reality. What is needed now is a steadfast commitment to the Jewish state’s survival, ensuring a haven for any Jew seeking refuge. Therefore, the war against Hamas must conclude with complete victory. Any other result would be disastrous for all of us. We would quickly become potential victims of terrorist organizations along our other borders. The suggestions arising from various quarters, especially from senior defense officials, indicate that the next colossal disaster is already imminent. The return of the hostages is crucial, but it is not more vital than the future of our national home. Since Israel’s inception, thousands have lost their lives to protect our country. It is tragic that this is not universally understood. With fear and trembling, it must be stated: The fate of the State of Israel is of immeasurable importance. Even as our hearts ache for those whose lives have been upturned, we must maintain proper perspective. At the same time, we must not forgo holding accountable those who faltered in their duties. Those now proposing that we cease fighting are effectively proposing to abandon the fate of all of us. Similar kidnappings will undoubtedly occur along other borders. The death toll will be unbearably high. Across the Middle East, those eager to exploit a weakened state, compromised by internal divisions, will rise against us. Iran will no longer fear the reach of the “Zionist entity.” Our names are already aflame, and those who have forgotten the lessons of the past should revisit the history books. —Haim Misgav (translated by Asaf Zilberfarb)
