21 IDF Troops Killed in Single-Day Tragedy Amid Ongoing Gaza Campaign

Twenty-one IDF soldiers were killed during a ground operation in Gaza, marking the largest single loss of life for Israeli troops within the embattled enclave since the conflict with Hamas erupted. The incident occurred in central Gaza near the border community of Kissufim.

According to IDF Spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, the soldiers were operating approximately 600 meters from the border, engaged in the destruction of structures and Hamas sites. This mission was part of the IDF’s broader efforts to establish a buffer zone, facilitating the return of residents to Israeli border communities.

The event unfolded around 4 pm when a Palestinian combatant fired an RPG at a tank securing the forces. Simultaneously, a powerful explosion occurred in two two-story buildings where most of the soldiers were stationed. The buildings collapsed due to the explosion, leading to the tragic event.

Hagari explained that the explosion was likely caused by mines planted by the troops for building demolition, emphasizing that a thorough investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the detonation.

Rescue forces worked tirelessly for hours to extract casualties from the collapsed buildings. The IDF has already confirmed the deaths of 10 soldiers, while the remaining 11 families have been notified, and their names will be released soon.

The devastating incident has elicited somber responses from top Israeli officials, with Defense Minister Yoav Gallant expressing the nation’s collective grief. President Isaac Herzog and Opposition Leader Yair Lapid also conveyed their condolences and support to the bereaved families, emphasizing the challenging conditions in which IDF soldiers operate. National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir said Israel must continue to fight Hamas so that the sacrifice of the fallen soldiers will not have been in vain.

The IDF is expected to launch a special investigation to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
