Palestinian Elections Commission Gears Up for Gaza Municipal Elections
The Palestinian Central Elections Commission (CEC) announced on Tuesday its readiness to conduct municipal elections in the Gaza Strip, awaiting a date from the Palestinian cabinet. This announcement followed a workshop in Gaza where Hamas officials discussed the potential election with leaders of Palestinian factions and civil institutions. Hamas leader Zakaria Abu Muammar expressed hopes for a national consensus on the elections, with the CEC supervising. Suhail al-Hindi, from the Hamas political bureau, emphasized their commitment to transparent elections and respecting its results. The Media Line's intrepid correspondents are in Israel, Gaza, Lebanon, Syria and Pakistan providing first-person reporting.

The Gaza Strip, home to 2 million residents, has been governed by the armed Islamist group Hamas since that group seized control of the territory in June 2007 following clashes with the Fatah movement and a Hamas victory in the January 2006 Palestinian legislative elections. Following the Hamas takeover, Israel and Egypt imposed a blockade on the coastal enclave, citing security concerns due to Hamas’ declared hostility toward Israel, attacks on Israeli civilians and soldiers, and connections to the Muslim Brotherhood and armed groups hostile to the Egyptian government.
