US Forces Destroy Houthi Drone and Boat in Yemen

US Central Command announced early Sunday that its forces successfully destroyed a drone and an unmanned boat in Houthi-controlled regions of Yemen. The statement, posted on social media platform X, confirmed that the uncrewed aerial vehicle and surface vessel posed an imminent threat to US and coalition forces, as well as merchant ships in the area.

Although the specific locations of the targets were not disclosed, residents in the Red Sea port city of Al Hudaydah reported hearing two explosions on Saturday. The action by US forces followed the Houthi group’s claim of responsibility for an attack on a vessel named Groton in the Gulf of Aden on Friday.

Since November 2023, the Houthi group has been conducting drone and missile attacks against ships they allege are linked to Israel, in an expression of solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. These attacks have resulted in damage to numerous cargo ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

In response, a US-British naval coalition stationed in the region has launched regular air raids and missile strikes against Houthi targets in northern Yemen since January. These operations aim to deter further Houthi aggression in the strategic waterways.
