US Justice Department and FBI Form Task Force To Investigate Hamas and Supporters
The US Justice Department and the FBI have established Joint Task Force October 7 (JTF 10-7) to investigate Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attack on Israel and identify individuals or entities providing financial, logistical, or ideological support to the group, including those operating in the United States. The task force, announced Monday, will focus on prosecuting those directly involved in the attack and dismantling Hamas’ global financial networks.
Attorney General Pamela Bondi underscored the urgency of holding Hamas accountable. “The barbaric Hamas terrorists will not win—and there will be consequences,” she said. Bondi also referenced meetings with families of US citizens kidnapped by Hamas, reaffirming the department’s commitment to seeking justice for victims. The October attack resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people, including 47 US citizens, and the abduction of around 250 hostages, including eight Americans.

Senior counterterrorism prosecutors, FBI officials, and intelligence analysts will lead the task force. Additionally, FBI agents will work alongside Israel’s National Bureau of Counter Terror Finance to target Hamas’ revenue streams, which rely on donations, cryptocurrency transactions, and illicit smuggling networks.
JTF 10-7’s launch comes at a time of intensified scrutiny on pro-Palestinian activism in the US, particularly on college campuses. Authorities recently arrested Columbia University graduate Mahmoud Khalil, a Syrian national accused of supporting Hamas. Federal agencies are also investigating whether some US universities have concealed foreign nationals involved in anti-Israel demonstrations.
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche emphasized the US government’s firm stance against terrorism: “Antisemitic acts of terrorism—whether here or abroad—will never go unpunished.” Similarly, FBI Director Kash Patel reiterated the agency’s dedication to the effort, stating, “The FBI is committed to establishing the Joint Task Force October 7 to continue investigative and victim assistance efforts related to the horrific acts of terror committed by Hamas.”
The initiative reflects the Trump administration’s broader counterterrorism strategy, which includes targeting groups that finance Hamas and other US-designated terrorist organizations. It also follows previous legal actions against Hamas leaders, including charges filed against Yahya Sinwar, the group’s political leader in Gaza, who was later killed by Israeli forces.
